Ellis Island
Jens Winsnes(s) arrived at Ellis Island in 1905. In the early 1970's, Lee Iacocca organized the restoration of Ellis Island, and by contributing to that restoration, the grandchildren of Jens were able to give Jens the honor of having his name engraved on this national landmark.
Caryl Matthews Luis visited Ellis Island and was the first to see his name engraved there. On June 28, 2007, Amy Winsness Droste, her husband Bruce, and sons Benjamin and Lucas visited the site. Ben and Lucas were the first GG grandchildren of Jens to stand where he first put his feet on American soil.
Jens first view of America would have been:
Bruce, Benjamin, Lucas, and Amy Droste
Next, the family went to Ellis Island.
Imagine Jens seeing this building!
He would have been processed in this hall!
Those that could not be processed that day would have stayed in dormitories along the sides of this floor. Three Hundred to a room.
Ben and Lucas found Jens' name!
Thanks to Warren, Caryl, Bob, John, Jerry and Jim, his name is there for his descendants to see forever on this national treasure!
The panel number containing his name is #470.
