Lokkesmoe
Read below to see how we came to even find this family, and finally on June 27, 2008, I talked to Bob Lokkesmoe, son of Julius, and he will forward the links to the information that has been found. Click on each of the 3 links below:
(the report takes some time to understand but each person has a number before their name - it's obvious when you look a bit at the organization)
(this is in rtf format and opens in MS Word or Open Office so it can be corrected and sent back to me to update the file)
(you have to keep clicking on the + to see it as it is large)

The story below tells how we came to even look for the Lokkesmoe line!
This family is a mystery needing solving! Responses to this question follow the photos!!!!
Tammy Dietrich Ramdolph of College Place WA sent photos, and the following explanation - anyone with information, please send me an email! Send to winsness @ charter.net (no spaces)
"My great grandfather and family, known as Thomas Thompson (Tonnesen in Norway), lived in Hendricks Minnesota for a number of years before moving to Hurdsfield, North Dakota in 1905 or so. All of the Thompson children but the youngest, including my grandfather, Ole, were born while the family lived there.
Apparently at least one child, Clara Thompson Gunderson, returned to the Hendricks Minnesota area to live with her oldest child, Ida Gunderson Nelson, before her death on September 14, 1980.
From old family pictures, I have for postcards of a man I believe to be Julius Lokkesmoe (Grandma spelled his name "Julis Lockemoe"). In one of them, he is apparently the teacher at a school in Hendricsk. In another he is wearing a dress uniform. In another, grandma wrote that he was with his schoolmates in Minnesota. The fourth one she wrote on the back that he was with his schoolmates of "South Dakota".
I would like to know the identities of the children of the photo of the Hendricks School as some of them may be my grandfatehr and his siblings, or perhaps just the younger siblings."
Julius Lokemoe is presumed to be the teacher, however, can anyone recognize the students?? Or date the photo? (1911-1912)
Julius Lokemoe
Looks like Julius is lower right - possibly with schoolmates of South Dakota? Does anyone recognize others?
Julius lower left - who are the others "Studying Greek" (with guitar?)
Bev Johnson's research:
From the book "Our Journey Back" published in 1989 by Mayme Nygaard, on page 130 it states that the teacher was J.B. Lokkesmoe in school district #73 in 1911-1912. (This school was located southwest of Hendricks, MN)
On page 137 we read: ...." teachers were Martin Lokkesmoe and Julius Lokkesmoe, who were brothers, who had attended Red Wing Seminary at Red Wing, MN."
In the book "Centennial Memories" published for Hendricks' centennial in the year 2000, on page 288 there is a photo of "Fourteen Clara's" and includes Mrs. Clara Gunderson, who is shown seated and holding a cane.
Jay Nelson replied:
It's not worth much, but I used to mow Ida Gunderson Nelson's lawn. Though there are (at least) 7 strains of Nelsons in Hendricks, we came from the same strain. She was a great lady.
And I'll mention one thing, though I'm not saying it has anything to do with this particular email. Singsaas Church used to have a small parochial school directly to the north. The school was moved into town and is still in use as a residential garage.
Becky Moore asks:
Is that picture from the same school that has been moved to the Hendricks Museum? Who knows where the school at the museum came from - now we have 2 old schools in town - one is the garage Jay mentioned, and the other is at the Museum.
Answer from Jay Nelson, (similar to one from Orlan Sandro):
The Museum school is different than the Singsaas school.
The old school at the museum was located less than one mile north of Hendricks. A closeup of that school can be seen at:

(note: the school windows on the picture differ from that of the museum's school.)
The Singsaas school building is at the home of Roger and Karen Christianson. Though there home is not visible in the photo, it is on the lefthand side of this pic:

Sept 28, 2008, received the following email and photos:
Hi Jim,
This is Bonita (Lovro) Strand again. I was just looking at the Hendricks Genealogy Project again and found the new info on Lokkesmoe. There is a few pictures on that sight ... one of which is labeled: Studying Greek .... it has Julius Lokkesmoe as the person on the left and asks if anyone knows who the other two are. A couple of years ago I was visiting Eldon Lovro and he allowed me to scan some pictures from his old family albums. Attached is his copy of that picture with all three people labeled. Jacob Lovro in the middle was Eldon's uncle and Jacob was also my dad's 1st cousin. Also, the picture above Studying Greek - it is of 7 young men & says that Julius Lokkesmoe is on the lower right -- I believe that to be in error -- I believe Julius to be the lower middle person. I will attach another picture from my dad's photo album which has Julius Lokkesmoe labeled in the picture & I believe he looks like the man in the lower middle. The spellings of the names may not be completely correct but I believe the labeling to be correct.
I was so happy to find the info on the Lokkesmoe family and I can't wait to read thru it.
Sincerely,
Bonita
The first photo is the same as above, but this time with names!
